Inspiring Emotion in Artwork
“Art work should elicit an emotional experience for both the artist and the collector…”
This is the belief of gifted Gardner Colby Gallery artist Claire Jane Kendrick.
Kendrick proves this to be true with each of her coastal contemporary abstracted seascape paintings. Her artwork delivers expressive brushstrokes, (often applied with palette knife), and a strong sense of color. The viewer cannot help but to be taken on a delightful journey into these colorful and full-of-life abstracted beach scenes.
Claire Jane Kendrick, was born in Ireland and attended college in England at Manchester Metropolitan University, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honors degree. She worked as a fashion designer in France, Belgium,Sweden and England before relocating to the United States of America in 2006.It was then she returned to painting and started exhibiting her work inFlorida. A gifted colorist, her paintings are bold, rich, and beautifully textured. Her landscape, still life and figurative paintings have a rich color palette, a result perhaps from her experience working in color forecasting during her days working in the fashion world of Paris, France.
Collectors respond to the contemporary style and the expressive way in which she paints. “I love the expanse of the marshlands, the big cloudscapes, the scenery is dramatic and I try to express that in my landscape paintings. When you’re out painting in these isolated places it feels like you have the world to yourself. The subtle shifts of light can offer a moment calm or energize the environment.” Claire’s paintings are color sensations, passionate responses, and magical experiences.
Attracting a local and international following, Claire has studied with many contemporary American painters, notably Cynthia Packard andAnne Packard.
“All the senses seem to be wide open in Claire’s paintings…………she is a talented and committed painter and clearly has her own voice…..a painter’s painter. I would place my bets on Claire now and in the future.”
Anne Packard, 2012
In Claire’s words from experience and growth while studying with Anne and Cynthia Packard:
“Anne complimented some of my paintings that were hanging in the Worley Faver Gallery in 2011. It is a huge honor for any artist when your painting speaks or evokes a reaction……it’s a confirmation and validation that something’s there———–a spark to ignite! Working with Anne in 2012 was essential as experienced eyes can see faults and weaknesses in our painting. The key to learning is to stay open, to hear the suggested fix. I was prepared to roll up my sleeves and work from the gut….face the grit, have thick skin and be prepared to hear the truth! Oh, by the way, they can be a dynamic duo and hard task masters! The pearls of wisdom only happen if you’re prepared to put up with a little grit in the shell. The life of an artist is a solitary profession. Once in a while you find another artist who will help and encourage you. Who will offer advice? That advice is only useful if you truly respect the work of the artist who offers it.
Over the ten day stay, too many books to read were thrust in my direction…….”read this, “oh, you will love this”, “when you get time have a look at this”! The “must try” product list was growing by the day. A savvy I-Pad user, Anne quickly types in a name…..have you ever seen such plagiarism! Entertaining and heated topics such as marketing, galleries, travel, and new paint products, famous artists both living and deceased were debated every evening. Life, love, and art, talked and stories shared……..this has been a special experience and one I treasure. Painting is a life long quest and at 80 years of age Anne is passionate and dedicated. I was struck and impressed that her daily quest is to improve her craft as an artist.
Painting can be one of the most heartbreaking and rewarding professions. Anne and Cynthia taught me that “the struggle”is a natural part of the process for a painter. They also taught me about stamina, discipline and fearlessness……the importance of bringing emotion, depth and passion into your work……….and that every brush mark helps define your creative style and helps you find your voice as an artist.”
One additional noteworthy accomplishment of Kendrick’s is being awarded an artist residency through the Provincetown Community Compact inCape Cod. This was an opportunity artists dream of!
The residency was in the Peaked Hills Bars National Register Historic District. It could be looked at as a primitive experience ,allowing only for the basic essentials in an effort to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the cape. Many of Kendrick’s oil paintings have a direct correlation to that inspiring and peaceful experience. During the residence she stayed in one of the 19 Dune Shacks with no electricity or indoor plumbing.Throughout this adventure she also had little connection with the outside world. Several famous artists and authors in the course of history found solitude and inspiration residing in those shacks. Including Eugene O’Neill, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer and Jackson Pollock.
The C-Scape shack is a 1 1/2 story, three room structure that includes a studio and wood stove.
It has a propane cooking stove, a small refrigerator, and an outhouse with a composting toilet.
“I feel I have graduated into a special tribe of Dune Dwellers by staying in one of the historic Dune Shacks” expressed Kendrick.
