Lael was born in British Columbia, Cananda, and she moved the the United States as an infant. An artist from childhood, Lael has worked in mediums as diverse as flowers, textiles and furniture. In 2000, Lael moved from her home of twenty-six years, Bainbridge Island, Washington, to Santa Fe, NM where she dedicated herself to painting full time Her subjects include still life, landscapes, interiors, portraits, animals and florals.
Lael has had many one-woman shows across the country, and was recently awarded Grand Prize by International Artist Magazine. She has also been featured many times in Southwest Art Magazine. Lael’s paintings, as one viewer put it, are “juicy”. The work is full of vibrant color combinations, plays of light and dark, and rhythmic brushwork. She takes a simple subject, whether it be shoes, fruit, flowers, figures or landscape and paints them with emotion. “A painting is a place where spirits touch and are revealed, those of the subject and those of the artist. I try to express in paint the beauty that I see in nature and the intimacy developed between myself and my subjects. Painting is the vehicle I use to record the bittersweet passing of a moment.” |
