Thomas Swanston was educated at the New York Studio School, Hobart College (Geneva, NY), and Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he earned a MFA in 1980.
For the past 25 years, Thomas has lived and worked in rural Georgia where he has come to know his surrounding area in great depth. The changing seasons and the migration of sandhill cranes are great sources of inspiration for Thomas....”migration speaks to the mystical movement through space and time, from one location to another and the ultimate return home.” His favorite time of the day is sunset when, as the artist says, “what you know to be true is evoked but not seen. It is that frame of mind that I capture -- the twilight between observation and imagination.”
Thomas uses different materials and techniques to create his shimmering canvasses. Many harken back to ancient times including waxes mixed with pigments and gold and silver leafing. Visual simplicity and a sense of spirituality in the natural world coexist in a Swantston painting.
Thomas has had 12 solo shows, 45 group gallery exhibitions, and has been included in 8 museum exhibitions. His work has been featured in many publications, most recently in “Green EcoManor: Sustainable Style,” Veranda Magazine (May-June 2008), “Designs for Life and Work that Intertwine”, Atlanta Journal-Constitution (March 2008), and “Three Green Homes.” Domino Magazine (March 2008). His work is in countless private and public collections including that of Disney Corp, Ritz Carlton Hotels, SunTrust Corp, Westin Hotels, and Emory University, Atlanta, GA.
