Ray Ellis is an artist of national reputation whose work achieved serious collector status in part as a result of the publication of three fine art books he collaborated on with noted American journalist and author, Walter Cronkite. Chronicling the coastal waters from Halifax to Key West on the East Coast and from Vancouver to San Diego on the West, these books showcase the prodigious and prolific talent, in both oil and watercolor, of this contemporary American Master.
Educated at the famed Philadelphia Museum School of Art, Ellis held his first one-man show in 1947 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. At first, Ellis concentrated on the demanding and unforgiving medium of watercolor. His landscapes and coastal images feature bold brushstrokes and an assured sense of composition. Recipient of numerous awards, he was elected to the prestigious American Watercolor Society. Mr. Ellis oils are equally dramatic if perhaps more impressionistic in style. Recently, Mr. Ellis has turned his talents to capturing on canvas the landscape of golf. He was chosen by the United States Golf Association and the PGA to do a commemorative series of golf paintings of the most famous PGA venues in the world. From Ballybunion to Winged Foot. Many private clubhouses feature an Ellis oil or watercolor in their collections. Mr. Ellis lives to paint. His studio in Edgartown on Marthas Vineyard is alive with students and admirers of his work. His work can be found in numerous museum and corporate collections, including the private collections of many celebrities and corporate CEOs.
